Ian Urbina is a Washington-based investigative reporter for The New York Times. His writings cover topics from domestic and foreign policy to commentary on everyday life, and have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and Harper’s. Urbina has received a Pulitzer, a Polk, and various other journalism awards for his work over the past two decades. For the past 3 years Urbina has specialized on crime at sea, producing an award-winning series for the Times called The Outlaw Ocean. The series chronicled a cast of characters -- gun runners, human slavers, vigilantes, stowaways, poachers, pirates, mercenaries, and a range of others. This reporting, primarily done offshore, took him across 5 seas and 14 countries in Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
